스니커는 1981년에 Self-Title 인 이 음반을 발표하고
다음해 Loose In The World라는 그들의 마지막 음반을 발표한 후
해체한 LA의 6인조 밴드입니다.
.
당시에 이 음반을 냈을 때
초일류 세션맨이었던 Jeff Baxter가 프로듀싱을 맡았고
한창 주가를 올리던 David Foster가 세션을 맡아주었다고 해서
꽤나 주목을 받았었고 인기를 끌었던 모양입니다.
.
게다가 우리나라에서도 당시 황인용의 영팝스에서 자주 흘러 나왔다던
이 음반의 유일한 빌보드 히트곡이자 백미인
"More Than Just Two Of Us"때문에
국내 에서도 매니아들 사이에서 인지도를 쌓았었던 그룹중 하나 입니다
.
사실 이 음반은 미국의 거대한 팝시장에서
극히 미미한 족적을 남겼던 음반이기도 합니다.
하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 완성도 높은 연주와 편곡,
.
거기에 대중의 귀를 사로 잡기에
모자람이 없는 달콤한 멜로디 라인등은
실로 AOR(Adult Oriented Rock)이라는 쟝르가 추구하는 방향성에
확실하게 부합한다는 느낌이 들기도 합니다.

그런 사실 때문에 단 2매의 앨범을 내고 해체 했다는 사실이
못내 아쉬운 밴드이기도 하죠.

재지한 코드로 진행되는 상쾌한 오프닝 Don't Let Me In,

말이 필요없는 그들의 최고 히트곡이자
국내에서 그들의 존재를 알리게 된 곡 More Than Just The Two of Us는
아름다운 멜로디 라인과 완벽한 어레인지가 어울리는 곡으로
팝송이 낼 수 있는 최상의 감동을 만들어내는 명곡이기도 합니다.

또한 그어떤 멜로디에도 결코 뒤지지 않는 매끈한 편곡에
Jeff Baxter의 튼실한 프로듀싱이 더 해져있는 앨범.

객관적으로 봤을 때 결코 난해하지 않은 음악성 임에도
센스있고 심플한 도회적인 서정미가 물씬 담겨있습니다.

그럼에도 불구하고
이 정도의 인지도에 머무를수 밖에 없었다는 사실은
그들의 음악을 듣고 공감하는
청자의 입장에서 못내 안타깝기도 한 부분입니다.

아주오래전.. 라이센스로 발매됐던 LP 해설지엔
이런 문구가 기록되어 있었던 기억이 납니다.

"찬란한 아침 햇살을 가르는 상쾌한 미풍이 두 연인을 맞아준다.
. 물위의 작은 배는 수줍게 춤을 추면서 두 사람을 기다린다....."

다분히 상업적 성공을 의식한 듯한 광고성의 카피긴 하지만,

이 문구가
결코 과장되지 않았다는 느낌이 들 정도의
상쾌한 음악을 들려주는 음반...
