24 October 1952, Vicksburg, Mississippi, USA.
Singer-songwriter Gray first played piano at the age of 12
and headed his own gospel group at 19.
.
He joined the Oak Ridge Boys as a writer
with their publishing company,
also becoming the keyboard player with their road band.
.
Later he became a member of pop-country band Exile
and was lead vocalist on two of their albums,
.
Don't Leave Me This Way (1980) and Heart And Soul (1981).
In the early 80s, three of his songs were US country number 1s,

"Take Me Down" and "The Closer You Get", both for Alabama
and "It Ain't Easy Bein' Easy" for Janie Frickie.
.
He signed with Columbia Records in 1983
and between 1983 and 1988,
he registered 11 US country chart successes,
including solo Top 10 hits with "If The Magic Is Gone"
and "Please Be Love", but his highest chart entry came
with his 1985 duet recording
with Tammy Wynette of "Sometimes When We Touch".

He had two minor duet hits in 1988 with Bobbi Lace,
but has not achieved a solo hit since 1986.

Mother died when he was two; raised on Lookout Mountain, Ga.
by aunt and uncle; sang in gospel group in his teens;
moved back to Mississippi; worked in print shop;
finalist on Ted Mack Amateur Hour; sang jingles in Jackson,

Miss.; formed the Revelations,
gospel group, performed mainly weekends;
to Nashville to work with the Oak Ridge Boys' publishing co.

'74; played piano with the Downings gospel group; returned to
Mississippi and worked on father's farm.
A demo tape of songs he'd written reached producer Mike Chapman,
who signed him to join Exile '79; co-wrote
with fellow group member J.P. Pennington incl.

Alabama's no.1 hits 'Take Me Down' '82,
'The Closer You Get' '83.
Left to pursue solo career '82; signed to Columbia as Janie Fricke hit no.1
with his song 'It Ain't Easy Being Easy'.

Others incl. Melissa Manchester, Englebert Humperdinck cut his songs,
while his own recordings of "Wounded Hearts' '83, "Left Side Of the Bed',
"Diamond In The Dust' '84,
 "Sometimes When We Touch' (duet with Tammy Wynette) '85,
"Please Be Love' '86 all made country top 10. Dropped by Columbia '87,
reappeared on smaller labels and continued with songwriting. Albums incl.

30년에 가까운 발매-연한 때문에선지
이젠.. 듣기조차 힘들어져 버린 멜로디가 됐다지만
반면 또 혼자 만 알고 있기엔
너무도 아까운 음원중 하나이기도 합니다 ..
.
그렇게 점점 기억에서 조차 잊혀져가는 탓으로 
가사 한줄 찾을수 없게 되어버린 노래이기에..
.
포스트.. 사이사이의 허전한 공백들로 인해 
더 을씨년스럽게만 들리는.. 'This Ol' Piano'..
