 최장기수로 투옥 되있을 당시의 시대배경입니다

존바이즈가 American Folk에서 진 일보해서
월드뮤직에 대한 음악적 관심이
날로 팽창해 갈때 였었습니다

로드리게즈나 소사와의 협연 등으로
반전에서 부터 독재에 대한 저항이나 인종편견과 박애..

이런것으로 그.. 이념적 성향을 달리하게되는
시점이기도 했었었구요 )

곡의 전체적인 느낌 또한
아프리카의 민속적인 느낌이 강하게 녹아있고

주의깊게 듣다보면 ....
아주 자연스럽게 인종문제를 다뤘던 영화 'The Power of One'에 대한
기억과도 연결 지어지게 됩니다

영화를 보셨던 분들이라면 ..아마
.
주인공인 PK가 감옥 속에서 죄수들을 독려 하며
흑인 죄수들과의 합창으로 폭력에 저항하던 그...영화속 장면을
인상 깊게 보셨으리라 생각됩니다 
.
바로 그때 나왔던 음악...
Southern Concerto 란 곡을 만든사람 또한
바로 이곡을 썼던 자니 클레그 였었습니다.
.
자니 클레그는 넬슨 만델라가 석방 되었을 때
이 ASIMBONANGA 를 축가로 불러서
많은사람들의 감동을 배가 시켜줬던 사람이기도 합니다
.
또한 그는
남아프리카의 절대 소외계층이던 흑인들의 권익 신장을 위해..
부단한 노력을 아끼지 않았던 음악인 중에
선봉에 서 있었던 사람이기도 했었습니다.

존 바에즈의 커버 역시 ..88년의 그래미 시상식에서
Best Contemporary Folk Recording 부문에
노미네이트 되기도 했었었구요.

노랫말에 등장하는 Steven Biko 는
이 앨범속... 동명의 제목인
피터 가브리엘의 곡 Biko(비코)에서...다시 등장하게 되는데 ,
